Methods of Plastic Fabrication

There are a few methods of plastic fabrication that you should know:

• Plastic welding- Is the process of taking two separate pieces of the same material (note: plastic will only weld together with other plastic material that is almost completely identical in composition) and with the aid of heat melting the base materials and feeding in filler rod of the same material to create a homogeneous blend. We call this fusion or cohesion. Making good quality plastic products through plastic welding involves both having a skillful welder who performs well and weld-ability of the base material.

• Cutting- simply cutting different pieces of plastic so it can be shortened or later combined 

• Bending- involves heating up plastic and then bending into shape. One method includes using an oven for heat within a molded shape so that the molten plastic then melts and is bent into the mold shape where it then cools and hardens.  

• Machining- most often with use a CNC router for assisting in the machining, cutting, and forming of the plastic parts. CNC stands for computer numerical control is a computer controlled cutting machine. 

• Final surface textures and contours for a part.
